Costa Rica mountain roads and park visits can take longer than expected, so flexibility during the day helps create the best experience.

🌋 Optional Stop – Poás Volcano National Park

Poás is one of the most famous volcanoes in Costa Rica and features one of the largest active craters in the world.

Visitors can walk a short paved trail from the parking area to the crater viewpoint. The visit is relatively easy and usually takes about 45 minutes to 1 hour total, including walking and viewing time.

Because the park operates with strict timed entry reservations, tickets must be purchased in advance.

🎟 Tickets must be purchased here:

Estimated visit time: 45 minutes to 1 hour

🌿 Optional Stop – La Paz Waterfall Gardens Nature Park

This private nature park is one of the most beautiful attractions in the Central Valley and includes:

• Several spectacular waterfalls
• Walking trails through rainforest
• Wildlife sanctuary with rescued animals
• Butterfly observatory
• Hummingbird garden
• Restaurants and viewpoints

A complete visit usually takes 2.5 to 3 hours to fully enjoy the trails and exhibits.

Estimated visit time: 2.5–3 hours

Because of the travel time from the cruise port and the return to San José, visiting every attraction in a single day may be very exhausting. However, you can discuss your preferences with the driver and prioritize the places that interest you the most.

☕ First Stop – Mi Cafecito Coffee Tour & Community Project

A small community-run coffee project where visitors can walk through coffee fields, learn about Costa Rican coffee culture, and purchase fresh coffee directly from local farmers at very affordable prices.

This stop offers an authentic local experience and supports the surrounding community.

☕ Second Stop – Hacienda Alsacia (Starbucks Coffee Farm)

Located on the slopes of Poás Volcano, Hacienda Alsacia is the only Starbucks coffee farm in the world and offers a beautiful visitor center with mountain views.

The guided coffee experience explains coffee cultivation, harvesting, processing, and roasting.

🍓 Lunch Stop – Fredo Fresas

A popular local restaurant near Poás Volcano known for traditional Costa Rican dishes and delicious desserts.

Their famous dessert called “Mi Dulce Algo” (sweet plantain with cheese and caramel) is a favorite among visitors.

This is a great relaxing lunch stop before continuing the journey down the mountains toward San José.

If you’d like, I can also make a second version that sounds more like a cruise excursion sales pitch (much more persuasive) which usually helps convert cruise passengers faster.
