American Airlines Launches Direct Flights from Philadelphia to Guanacaste, Costa Rica
Starting December 7, 2024, American Airlines will introduce a new direct flight route from Philadelphia International Airport (PHL) to Guanacaste, Costa Rica (LIR). This marks the first time American Airlines will offer this route, catering to travelers during the high season from December 7, 2024, through March 30, 2025. Flights will operate every Saturday, providing an excellent travel option for those looking to explore Costa Rica.
Flight Schedule and Aircraft Details
The flight is scheduled to land at Guanacaste Airport at 12:33 p.m. and will depart back to Philadelphia at 1:00 p.m. The route will be serviced by a Boeing 737-800 aircraft, accommodating 172 passengers.
Expanding American Airlines’ Presence in Costa Rica
Rafael Sanchez, American Airlines’ Regional Manager for Central America, expressed excitement about the new route: “We are proud to continue growing our presence in Costa Rica with our new weekly route between Liberia and Philadelphia, beginning in December. This winter, we will be celebrating our 35th anniversary in the country with a robust operation of up to 13 daily flights.”
Boosting Tourism in Costa Rica
The United States remains Costa Rica’s largest market for air travel. According to the Costa Rican Tourism Institute (ICT), 643,141 U.S. tourists visited the country in the first four months of 2024. This new route is expected to further increase U.S. tourist arrivals.
William Rodriguez, Costa Rica’s Minister of Tourism, highlighted the significance of the new route: “We are pleased to announce the confirmation of the new direct air route between Philadelphia in Pennsylvania and the province of Guanacaste. This is the only route connecting our country with this U.S. city and will increase visitation from the United States.”
Additional Direct Routes from Guanacaste Airport
In addition to the new Philadelphia route, American Airlines offers direct flights from Guanacaste to several other major U.S. cities, including Charlotte (CLT), Dallas (DFW), New York (JFK), Miami (MIA), and Chicago (ORD).

César Jaramillo, General Manager of Guanacaste Airport, shared his enthusiasm: “We welcome with great enthusiasm the start of this new route to Philadelphia, which will provide the first direct connection to this East Coast city. Announcing new frequencies at this time of year is exciting and fills us with hope for the 2024/2025 high season, for which the entire airport community is working to offer the quality of service that characterizes us.
