The 780-meter-long suspension bridge, a vital link between Cañas and Nicoya cantons along National Route 18, was originally constructed in 2003 with an intended lifespan of 100 years. However, after just 15 years of operation, the bridge requires extensive rehabilitation to ensure continued safety and functionality.

Motorists are advised to utilize alternative routes during the closure, such as the La Abundancia ferry crossing or the scenic 40-minute detour around the gulf.
